Action and Expression Strategic Networks – The “HOW” of learning
Introduction
The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines inform the educator on ways to increase the learners understanding of and success with academic work through incorporating the students unique learning style, cultural appropriateness, motivation, and interests. I wish to model a student journey by providing multiple means of Action and Expression, moving from the Access stage of the UDL guidelines to the Build stage then through to the Internalize stage.
Access
I will provide options for physical action by creating content that includes video, still images, scrolling text, audio recording, and digital infographic information that does not require sound. Consideration will be given to the visibility of displayed items by including details on how to access the windows accessibility features.
Build
My content will provide options for Expression & Communication. I will ensure that my content affords the learner the opportunity to express knowledge, ideas, and concepts online by providing an option for response. This may include audio response, mouse click selections, and typing. Virtual manipulatives for learners who may have health conditions, impairments or other limitations will be included in my build. I will provide the learner with multiple ways to approach a task for iteration toward mastery.
Internalize
I will provide options for executive functions by allowing learners to take advantage of their environment. Resourcing custom educational tools that are local to the learner and more readily available. This may include goal identification charts, posting outlines of the objectives, and providing guidance in a collaborative function with family and community (when appropriate). A flow-chart will be developed that includes the planned goal to be reached and the steps that are suggested to initiate the journey. The acceptance of failure will be built-in to stimulate mastery. Checkpoints will provide a “pause” for the learner to reset and/or map-out next steps.
