Making Reading Fun

California State University, Fullerton
(audio version below)

I viewed a remarkable video, presented by CSUF College of Education, on making reading fun. By the time I finished watching, I realized that there were 3 video clips that really stood out to me. In the paragraphs that follow, I will give a brief description of each clip and what made me remember it so well.

Clip #1

This part of the video can be viewed at 11:59 – 12:50 . It is part of the concentration/memory 5-day plan. This stood out to me because I teach kindergarten and there are lots of sight words for them to master before they get to first grade. With this activity, I am helping them memorize their words in a fun way and teaching them a fun study skill.

Clip #2

This part of the video can be viewed at 22:07.4 – 22:23.3 . This part is entitled: Strategies for Struggling Readers. I was really interested in this portion of the video because of the skill (retelling) that it discusses. Many of my students struggled with retelling a story. They would simply talk about a similar event or experience that they had in their lives or confuse the events of the story with a different story. I liked the idea of having the learners retell a story with a different ending that they create. Also, allowing them to change parts of the story would seem to be a fun activity. My little learners would really enjoy this fun activity.

Clip #3

This part of the video can be viewed at 26:55.2 – 27:26.9 . This is also part of the Strategies for Struggling Readers. I enjoyed learning about ways to help my little learners by giving them the creative license to imagine that they are the experts. This would increase their confidence by arming them with additional knowledge that may not be in the book. It would also give me a chance to instruct them on some basic research habits.
