Being The Maker
Creating a sketchnote-style video was an experience reminiscent of my work with Adobe Premiere Pro. Whenever I am utilizing the Adobe Cloud membership apps, I am able to craft interesting and engaging multimedia presentations. Similarly, organizing the information for this sketchnote presentation was like storyboarding a video. It was imperative for me to ensure a clear and logical progression for my viewers to follow. I knew how I wanted to advance through the sketchnote, enabling a seamless and coherent flow that would be both educational and engaging for my audience.
Screencasting, But Different
Sketchnote video creation closely resembles the real-time feeling of screencasting with a few notable differences. First, I used FigJam to move my questions around on the whiteboard, akin to writing on sticky notes and repositioning them on your desk or paper. Next, I leveraged FigJam’s typing feature to directly input text on the whiteboard, which reminded me of using my dry erase board in my kindergarten classroom. Lastly, I could effortlessly organize and transform the categories and questions. The animation features in the program made the creation process enjoyable, ensuring that the video would be as fun for viewers as it was for me.
Engage Students and Colleagues
I enjoyed a technically rewarding experience during my production of a sketchnote video. I believe videos, such as these, will be very useful in my classroom and among colleagues. Typically, I write on my whiteboard to illustrate lesson portions and occasionally use an overhead document projector. The creation of sketchnote videos allows me to combine several teaching tasks, reducing the time spent writing and increasing time for demonstrating and discussing with engaging visuals and real-time alterations. This technology might even replace the need for dry erasers and markers, or at least use them as secondary tools.
Final Thoughts
“Sketchnote videos: a small dose of tech, creatively vibrant and engaging.”
